Welcome to DR. G Art Lab

I never imagined that my Ph.D. would lead me here—to an art studio, crafting pieces that celebrate culture, resilience, and everyday beauty. Dr. G Art Lab grew out of a turning point in my life, when I left academia and embraced art as both a passion and a new path.

The Academic Spark That Started It All

My story begins with my doctoral research, where I studied how artists in El Salvador used creative expression to reflect the trauma of war. Growing up, I had left my home country during that very conflict, carrying fragmented memories of a difficult time. While my research was rooted in history and theory, it was the art itself—murals, installations, theater—that captivated me. Slowly, I realized that creating art could be as powerful as studying it. I picked up a brush and painted my first piece: aguacateros, the stray dogs of El Salvador that quietly witness the world around them.

Finding a New Path

For years, I thought academia would be my lifelong career. But life, as it often does, had other plans. A divorce in my late 30s made it impossible to pursue out-of-state jobs due to custody arrangements, and I began rethinking my path. I returned briefly to teaching high school and later found remote work in publishing, where I learned digital tools like Photoshop and graphic design. It was during this period that I realized art could be more than a hobby—it could be a way to connect with others, preserve cultural memory, and share my story.

What Inspires My Work

Much of my art is inspired by Latinx traditions and the overlooked beauty in everyday life. You’ll find calla lilies, talavera tiles, huipils, and mandalas woven into my designs, along with themes of resilience and community. Like Pablo Neruda, who found poetry in the ordinary, I want my art to honor the simple yet profound moments of life.

Overcoming Doubts and Building Community

Starting an art business later in life wasn’t easy—I wrestled with self-doubt, hearing issues, and the fear that it was “too late” to try something new. But I’ve learned that passion and persistence can carry you farther than you ever imagined. My work has been featured on Netflix’s The Rookie and recognized with awards in El Salvador, but what matters most to me is building a community of people who feel seen and inspired by my art.
